Prayer, done correctly, brings astonishing results. We know - not just from our decades of bible research and study, nor from our years of international teaching on prayer, by invitation, in churches and bible colleges, but through experience. Awesome things happen through effective prayer. We personally have seen the power of prayer in every aspect of our lives and have witnessed healings, miracles, provision and abundance. We have seen storms calmed by a prayer and watched a nation transformed through a day of prayer.
Prayer is talking to and listening to God. He intends that you use your prayer to get to know Him and access all the kingdom power available to you. God will lead you deeper and deeper into this knowledge, and that will open and expand your ability to use prayer the way God intends: as an effective tool to speak to God, receive wisdom, create through prayer and be led to blessings in your life. These undiluted heavenly encounters are where pivotal things happen, and momentous changes are announced and prepared for. They are also the times when you’ll experience God on a whole new level that will change you and lift you higher in your spiritual life.
At the core of creation is the pure vibration of God’s voice, ‘upholding all things by the word of His power.’ Hebrews 1:3. So, God knows what He will create and speaks, and it’s created, and it continues as He intended. Allow this truth to go deep into your heart because it’s going to be a key to power in your prayers, because you were created to be like God. He formed people out of the God-infused dust He spoke into existence and breathed His life-giving breath into us so that we would have the essence of God in us, filling us with living potentiality. That’s right. All of the rest of creation was spoken into specific forms with specific attributes. Only humans were formed and received the unique “Breath of life” - God’s breath. We are distinct from all other life. God imparted some of His immortal Spirit into us and gave us the “quickening” of God. “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.” Job 33:4. You are like (but not equal to) God with His potentiality.
You were uniquely created to be like God with the ability to use your words to create. So, how do you do that? “The why of natural law is the living voice of God, which brought all worlds into being, cannot be understood to mean the bible, for it is not a written or printed word at all, but the expression of the will of God spoken into the structure of all things. This word of God is the breath of God filling the world with living potentiality.” A. W. Tozer. What is the ‘structure of things’ that fills you with ‘living potentiality’? God’s will is expressed in creation and filled with His Spirit. “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63.
We give life to that potentiality by using our intent and then speaking words, including words in prayer. This unique gift of being able to create through our words was given by God only to people. Your ‘living potentiality’ finds expression when the Holy Spirit and the human spirit agree - full life results. Both the words of God and the words you speak are working in the unseen dimension of the spirit, bringing into existence the will and intentions of those words. Your spoken words, filled with your will and intention, do this just as the words God speaks.
God puts great emphasis on prayer because it is our way of communicating with Him and the way we create. “It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer”. Matthew 21:13. The bible tells every believer to be faithful in prayer (Romans 12:12) and to keep “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18. Prayer keeps our focus right, helps us check our motives and keep our thought life controlled. It also saturates your life and your worship, creating the perfect environment to initiate miraculous living.
Prayer is communication between you and God. It’s God revealing His heart, mind, and thoughts to you as you do the same. You are partnering with God during your fellowship in prayer. Praying is allowing God to unfold His will and purpose for your life as you spend time with Him. There’s more! God’s communication is way more than speech; it’s loving, present communion. He’s a very personal God, in touch and fully aware of Himself and all His creation and very present in time and eternity. God is speaking by voice and through His word, through angels, visions, dreams, prophecy, the Gifts of the Spirit, through miracles and ‘thin places’. Hebrews 2:4 “God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.” God is and always will be communicating. He’s in touch with us, always. Signs and wonders, miracles and the gifts of the Holy Spirit all form part of God’s communication with us and are necessary in our daily lives as expressions of God communicating His love to us. And beyond that, it serves as a living example of the power behind all communication from God. We are made in His image and likeness - we, to a lesser degree, have the ability to communicate through signs, wonders, miracles and the Gifts of the Spirit, and we have the same power behind our prayers.
Did you know He takes the words you utter to Him so seriously that He keeps them before Him in heaven? Revelation 8:3-4 “Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. And he was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand.”
Our prayers are treated as holy acts, placed upon the golden altar before God. This is a mind-blowing scripture if we allow the truth to penetrate our hearts! It is offered by the angel as an offering of incense, sweet-smelling and pleasing to Him. Our prayers please God and rise before Him! Our quiet times in prayer are not lost somewhere in the vastness of heaven.
Prayer is never lost or used up, nor does it fade out of existence. God remembers our prayers. Here’s an example in one man’s life. Acts 10:4 “And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, ‘What is it, lord?’ So, he said to him, ‘Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.’” This is the wonderful story of a devout man who prays to know God more fully and receives an angel in a vision that guides him to where he can hear the kingdom message through one of the disciples. The point of this scripture is that his prayers came up as a memorial - a remembrance before God. All righteous prayer is before God as incense, as a sweet smell to please Him. God is intent on your prayers; they stay before Him, and He remembers.
Giving fragrance to heaven. Revelation 5:8 “Now when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” Our words sound in His very presence, and He hears and responds. In heaven, our prayers are used in the worship of Christ, our King and great Redeemer. So, though we are on earth, our words of adoration and petition ring with the heavenly beings in a symphony that glorifies God. The above scripture differs from the last one we looked at in Revelation in that this scripture shows that the prayers of the saints are not mixed with incense but become the incense.
How do prayers become the very incense that brings fragrance to the chamber of God? Let’s explore this. 2 Corinthians 14-15 “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” How do we become the fragrance of His knowledge and the fragrance of Christ? Incense is made of oils and perfumes combined and prepared to release its fragrance only in fire. As believers, we are perfumed with the aroma of the sweet Rose of Sharon, a name and manifestation of the fragrance of Christ. When this is mixed with the oil of the Holy Spirit without measure, given complete freedom in our lives, incense is formed. Once that touches the holy fire before God, which is the expression of His holiness, all the sweetness is released to the pleasure of God.
The redeemed are a fragrance to God because we carry the knowledge of God in us and diffuse it into the world! Our lives are a sweet-smelling aroma to God, and that fragrance is conveyed through our prayer. God is and always will be a prayer-hearing and prayer-answering God. He is a wall of fire and our very glory, to defend us, protect us, purify us and release the fragrance unto God.
Prayer is pure energy, and energy cannot be used up. Your prayers are not used up or disappear as incense that burns on the altar and is finally consumed. It is described as incense because it is fragrant. 2 Corinthians 2:14 -15. Your prayers stay before God, adding fragrance to heaven. Here on Earth, we move through a time tunnel where we live linear lives – yesterday is past, today is present, and tomorrow has not happened. There is no time in heaven; all is eternally now. So, all you have prayed in the past and all you will pray in the future will be collected and held before God. Doesn't this just fill you with awe?
