The Gift of Time

We spend an awful lot of time living in the next moment just beyond this one, not connecting to the reality of what and who we are in this moment. In doing that, we never really live in the moment we have.

“I don’t have time.” As a counsellor and life coach, I often hear this. Everyone has the same 24 hours. So, what you need is a change in perception of what your 24 hours are, in the currency of your life.

Time is invested, not spent. Time is the one commodity you cannot buy, barter or trade for. So, protect your use of time because how you use it will hugely contribute to your success. “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time.” Ephesians 5:15-16. You walk circumspectly by taking each step in your life 'looking around' - being aware and present in the moment.

We spend an awful lot of time living in the next moment just beyond this one, not connecting to the reality of what and who we are in this moment. It’s so easy to be planning that meeting, to-do list, or career move in this moment, isn’t it? This is one of the greatest ways our lives are stolen. If you’re constantly crowding out this real moment of life that you’re in now with future moments you don’t yet have, you end up never living or enjoying your life. You never experience what God has in store for you in this moment.

Today, this moment in time is where you experience God, what He’s doing and how you can live in a wide-awake, aware relationship with everything around you. It’s in this unique moment that you’ll find God and the inspiration and clarity of the life you’re experiencing.

Here's a great daily affirmation to help you build the habit of really living your life by being present: I will treat my time and my life as an investment. You are alive right now, this moment, so you have time right now. It’s a question of what you’re doing with this moment. You’re investing it by reading this post, which will bring a perception change to you. And, with your intentioned action, it’s changing your today and tomorrow. Having time is about choosing what you do with this moment.

The next time you reach for your phone to check your social media for the umpteenth time, check yourself and instead use the 5 minutes to look at and develop in the areas of your life where you want greater abundance. Give yourself the gift of time by investing those 5 minutes in a gift for you. Here are a few things you can do, no matter where you are, that will bless and grow your life:

  • Redeem your time by spending 5 minutes with God, and talk to Him about how your day is going and ask if He has anything He wants to tell you. Life-changing prayers don't have to be long or out loud; you just have to be present and listening.

  • Spend the 5 minutes in taking deep, slow breaths and focus all your attention on your breath. Where do you 'feel' your breath? Be aware of your ribcage and stomach expanding and contracting. Just breathe and keep your attention on your breath. And when your mind wanders, bring it back to your breath. This is one of the easiest ways to bring your full attention to the present and become more aware and alert so you can hear God and your own intuition. And this type of breathing is great for your body and brain!

  • Carry your journal with you and jot down thoughts that come to you and things you want to explore or talk to God about later.

  • Spend 5 minutes cloud watching and allow your mind to just drift and daydream. This gives your brain a breather and allows your creative self a chance to plan and play with what you want your future to be like.
