Imagine a beautiful castle inhabited by a just and righteous king who has a wonderful baby lying in a crib, happily gurgling away. Through the window, a shadowy figure enters and, waiting for the right moment, snatches the little child out of the crib and disappears into the night.
The distraught king sets in place every possible means to find his stolen child and takes every measure to prepare for the return of the child. He never stops looking or longing for his child. Meantime, the child is taken to a dank basement and locked in this dark place to spend the rest of their life in slavery. The child is told that it was an unloved, unwanted throwaway child born of awful parents and that the life it has is more than it deserves. The years pass slowly. The king has everything in place to come and rescue his beloved child, and in a triumphant move, frees his child and returns the child to its rightful place in the castle.
The whole kingdom rejoices except this grown child. After all the years of being treated as a person of no worth, this royal child cannot accept and be what it was born to be. Although every piece of evidence surrounding this child clearly shows it is royal and much loved and valued, this child continues to think quietly within itself that it is of no worth. Why is it so, and what’s to be done to change this? Our royal child has basement thinking. The mind of this child is dealing with unrenewed memories that prevent it from releasing itself from a false past and a false present.
Like this royal child, we all hold onto some of our basement thinking. When our king comes to snatch us back from a thief who’s kept us in the basement and told us we’re unloved and have no worth, we secretly continue to believe the lies he told us all our lives. We not only bought the lies, but we made them the foundation of the life we're building.
Our minds (the centre of us) treat our thoughts as real and tangible and bring forth bodily and mental responses to the reality of this place and moment in time. Our programming determines HOW we think and how we RESPOND to what we think. God is truth, and He will expose this in us to bring us to wholeness. The image and likeness of Himself in us will clash and usually force an emotional confrontation within the believer who holds onto the unrenewed memory and thinking. If left untended, these lies can become a clashing and binding point between our potential and the limitations we’ve believed about ourselves all our lives. We become double-minded, and that prevents us from receiving from God. James 1:6-8.
We can’t think like royalty and slaves at the same time - the thought patterns and actions are opposite.
Jesus did not come just to restore us but to set us up in the kingdom of God. He was the king of heaven who lived as a man on earth, so we could copy Him. We are to learn how to operate in our royal bloodline while on earth, so we can operate as kings and priests to God. Revelation 5:10.
The problem with being royal…
To reign, you need a certain perspective and the development of the right mind and skill sets. You have to think and act in a certain way. We’ve lived with the limitations of sin and Satan’s story of who we are for so long that it’s saturated our lives and our thinking. We’ve bought into it fully. Then we have this wonderful redeeming encounter with God, and we step into liberty and our royalty. Here we are, restored and reigning – but those things we believed still haunt us. We have a wonderful, restored spirit, but we’re still prone to basement thinking.
This is the part we play to fully step into who we really are. It takes time and training to remember how to think and act like God – to be royal. This is your part because “you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” Colossians 3:9-10 NLT.
A new perspective.
Our slave mentality to sin, wrong thinking and wrongdoing can get in the way, polluting and limiting how we live and think. When Israel was delivered mightily through miracles, they still saw themselves as slaves, saying, “We were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Numbers 13:32-33. Imagine listening to a bad report with a huge bunch of grapes dangling on a pole that two men needed to carry! They had seen miracles and experienced deliverance, and yet held onto a view of themselves as slaves. We do the same. We are free, but living free requires us to allow that freedomto work into every part of our lives.
We are royalty, regardless of what we choose to do with our lives. The power God gave us was choice. What we choose to give our intellect to attain or fully know will determine the conclusions we have about life and how fully we live it. Renewing our minds to who we truly are opens us to an astonishing life.
Right now, take Post-it notes and write out a reminder to yourself of who you are. Put it on the fridge, in your car, in your office. Let it sink into your heart. Find scriptures that will lift you, encourage you and reveal you for who and what you are. Build a vision board where you pray and make Romans 8:16-17 a part of your daily prayer. This may be hard to start, especially if you have had a friend, boss, parent or spouse who has pulled you down verbally or you've been abused in some way. But even the believer who experienced none of these things still has an enemy trying to hold you in old patterns so you will not grow into all God wants for your life.
You are a royal representative of the kingdom of heaven. Step fully into who you are and how you should act and respond. Be the living advertisement of God and His kingdom to all you meet.
