Finding your Work Direction

You spend a third of your life at work. Taking the time to examine how that third of your life is invested is important. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT.

With God’s advice and careful consideration, you will find your ideal work.

Peter was a fisherman who stopped fishing when Jesus told him to follow Him and become a fisher of people. Peter stayed with a tanner who remained a tanner. Paul was a tentmaker, called by Jesus to ministry, who supported his ministry by tentmaking. Wilberforce was a politician who thought he should leave politics and become a minister. Advice from a man sensitive to God, much prayer and careful thought led him to conclude that he was to remain in politics because the Lord had raised him up in politics to transform conditions for people.

These examples show us that if we rely on our intellect alone, we won’t be able to determine God’s will and find where we’ll be best positioned in our work. Pray, consider godly counsel, and carefully think things through (a characteristic of the most successful businesspeople). Doing this brings you to that special blessing: “God will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:6b. In this case, your ideal vocation. You spend a third of your life at work. Taking the time to examine how that third of your life is invested is important. To assist you, take a journey of discovery to find who you are at your core and your life trend. Here are questions you can explore:

Can I identify a life trend? What keeps happening over and over that brings me the most fulfilment?

For us, it's helping people grow, making things around us better and being creative. Identify what gave you contentment, happiness, pride, fulfilment and satisfaction over the years. It’s very revealing. Knowing this helps you focus on what matters to you. And it will help you decide on a job and career choices. So, take a panoramic look over your life and ask yourself what keeps repeating itself as a theme?

What do I love doing that I’d do even if I didn’t get paid? Your true career or vocation is directly tied to your purpose. What you do to make your living doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with why you’re here. Paul wasn’t on earth to leave a legacy of great tents, but it did generate revenue to support him and his team in ministering. His passion was saving and developing people.

What do other people say I’m good at? Be careful of going in a direction just because others think you should. That said, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the way others compliment you. Is there anything that people say you should do professionally, or more of? While crossing America, training church leaders, we kept hearing the same thing: ' You should write books and get this great teaching down for a wider audience.' This happened everywhere we went! Although we had written more than 200 courses, we'd never written a book. In 2006, God spoke very clearly that it was time to get our knowledge out as a legacy to the world, and the best way to do that was through books.

More than 40 Christian books later, we can see how this path perfectly fits with our life trend and gives us great fulfilment. We had written material to help believers before we started teaching and training anyone. It just came naturally for us. We loved sharing knowledge and did so freely.

God had led us to start our writing as we were moving out of full-time ministry, but He had been preparing us over several years for the transition.  God's leading is so gracious and ordered! We had several years to make the transition and hone our skills in writing, learn how to translate our teaching styles to achieve the same results in print. We haven't looked back and continue to enjoy our work as authors, public speakers and teachers. As you can see, the process was organic; it grew over several years while other things were happening in our lives, and we continued in our work of the time. God uses where you are to grow where you are going.
